Today, Kendall had her appt with the Dermatologist to look at her upper lip. She does indeed have what is called a hemangioma. A hemangioma is mainly a collection of extra blood vessels in the skin. They are one of the most common birthmarks in newborns. The cause of them is unknown. They are more common in girls and babies that were born early (which Kendall was). (Sidenote--I had one on my elbow when I was a baby, they are sometimes called "strawberries" too.) They usually shrink away in time. Hemangiomas in certain locations may have a higher risk of complications. This includes the face, esp the nose & lips. The Dr considers Kendall's a moderate risk site. She said it is more deep than superficial. She said she saw another baby with one today and it was worse than K's. She gave us an Rx for Vanos cream, which we are to apply daily. We go back in 2 months to have it checked out again. We'd only go back sooner if we notice it has grown or darkened. So I guess we'll see.
